Safe Urban Space Committee

Safe Urban Space Committee declares women-friendly zones in the NCR!

It takes over public spaces by announcing that it is from now on a women friendly zone.

The aim is to create awareness about street harassment.

The approach is perpetrator -based and solely focuses on what men need to do/ need to stop doing in order for women to feel safe.

It recommends men to change their behaviour, the same way women tend to change their behaviour when they are out in public in order to avoid harassment. As this strategy fails, the only solution is that men do the opposite of what women do.

  1. Women avoid going out after dark - in order to change that, men should not be out after dark.
  2. Women think about how to behave and how to dress - in order to change that, men should stop staring at women and if they cannot control that, they can get blindfolded.
  3. Women always try to avoid being out in the streets by themselves and coordinate to go in a group or with a male they trust - in order to change that, men should not hang out in groups and should be escorted by a woman, so that other women see that this man is under supervision of a woman who knows him
  4. Women are harassed by men who take pictures of them with cameras or mobile phones - in order to change that, men should not take cameras and phones with them.

Women do not need to change! The mind set of men needs to change!
